Silver Fern Young Gun To Make The Move To Suncorp Super Netball

16 August 2024

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the netball world, Silver Ferns star Grace Nweke has signed with the New South Wales Swifts for the 2025 Suncorp Super Netball season. The 22-year-old shooter, widely regarded as one of the most talented players to emerge from New Zealand in recent years, will leave the ANZ Premiership League, where she has been a standout for the Northern Mystics since 2019.

Nweke’s decision to join the Swifts comes with significant controversy, as it will rule her out of contention for the Silver Ferns in 2025, due to Netball New Zealand’s strict eligibility rules. These rules stipulate that players must compete in the domestic league to be eligible for national selection. Despite this, Nweke remains confident in her decision, citing the opportunity to challenge herself against the world’s best in the Suncorp Super Netball as a key factor.

“Playing with the Swifts in Australia will provide me with new challenges and experiences that will further hone my skills and, ultimately, benefit my game at all levels,” Nweke said. “I am ready for a shake-up and a new journey and cannot wait to get started with the Swifts.”

The move has been met with mixed reactions in New Zealand, where Nweke’s departure is seen as a significant blow to the Silver Ferns’ international prospects. The team struggled without her during the most recent Netball World Cup, where they finished a disappointing fourth. However, Netball New Zealand Board Chair Matt Whineray expressed support for Nweke’s decision, emphasising that it aligns with her desire to grow as a player and a leader.

“We understand this has been a very difficult decision for Grace to make, and one that she has not taken lightly,” Whineray said. “As someone who is a future leader within the Silver Ferns, Grace has expressed to us her desire to continue to grow both on and off the court and be the best Silver Fern she can be.”

Swifts head coach Briony Akle is thrilled to have Nweke join the team, recognising the immense potential she brings. “Grace is one of the best shooters in the world, and we are very excited to welcome her to the Swifts,” Akle said. “While she has established herself at international level, I feel she has only scratched the surface of her potential, and we cannot wait to share this next chapter with her.”

Nweke’s departure from the Mystics marks the end of an era for the club, but also the beginning of an exciting new chapter in Grace’s career as she steps onto one of netball’s biggest stages.

The Melbourne Vixens have solidified their 2025 Suncorp Super Netball roster by re-signing the dynamic trio of Rudi Ellis, Lily Graham, and Zara Walters. These re-signings ensure the Vixens retain the core squad that led them to their third Grand Final appearance in five years, striking a balance between seasoned experience and emerging talent.

Rudi Ellis, a standout defender, enjoyed a breakout 2024 season, featuring in all but one of the Vixens’ 17 matches. Her reach and elevation provided coach Simone McKinnis with crucial versatility in the defensive lineup, earning Ellis a call-up to the Australian FAST5 team. The 27-year-old, who returned to the Vixens after a stint as a training partner in 2018-19, has consistently impressed with her commitment to learning and growth against top-tier opponents.

Zara Walters, a product of the Victorian pathway, made an immediate impact during the 2024 season, debuting with two full 60-minute performances against the Mavericks and Thunderbirds. Despite a lower back injury that sidelined her for eight rounds, the 20-year-old midcourter demonstrated professionalism and resilience, returning to play a pivotal role in the Vixens’ late-season surge. Walters’ strength and vision in the midcourt earned her the club’s Rookie of the Year award and a place in the Australian FAST5 team.

Eighteen-year-old Lily Graham, elevated to the main squad following Mwai Kumwenda’s pregnancy announcement, made the most of her opportunities with six appearances at SSN level. Graham’s versatility across shooting positions and her willingness to take on high-pressure shots, including six super shots in a standout performance against West Coast Fever, highlighted her potential as a future star.

Head coach Simone McKinnis expressed her excitement at retaining these promising players. “We’re thrilled to have re-signed Rudi, Zara, and Lily. We’ve started to build something special with this group, and we can all feel that we have more to achieve together. As a coach, nothing excites me more than players like Rudi, Zara, and Lily—talented athletes who are eager to learn and really take the game on,” McKinnis said.

The re-signings of Ellis, Walters, and Graham complete the Vixens’ 2025 squad, setting the stage for another competitive season. With the team narrowly missing out on ultimate success this year, the drive to go one better in 2025 is palpable. As these young stars continue to develop their skills and contribute to the team’s culture, the Vixens look poised to be a formidable force in the upcoming season.

GIANTS Netball club has expressed its gratitude to assistant coach and academy manager Jenny O’Keeffe for her six years of dedicated service. O’Keeffe, who joined the club in 2019, has been a vital part of the GIANTS’ coaching team, working alongside head coach Julie Fitzgerald to steer the team through multiple successful seasons.

O’Keeffe’s tenure at the GIANTS saw her not only support Fitzgerald but also play a pioneering role in the establishment and success of the GIANTS Netball Academy. The Academy, launched in 2019, has been instrumental in developing young athletes, many of whom have progressed to contracted positions within the club. O’Keeffe also led the GIANTS Netball Academy team in the 2023 Australian Netball Championships and took charge of the club’s participation in the inaugural Super Netball Reserves competition this year.

GIANTS Netball Executive General Manager, Tim Underwood, praised O’Keeffe’s contributions, stating, “Jenny has been an integral part of our GIANTS Netball family for the past six years. Her unwavering dedication and genuine care for our players has left an everlasting mark on our club. We are immensely grateful for her contribution and wish her nothing but the best in her future endeavors.”

In a major coup for the Queensland Firebirds, prolific goal shooter Mary Cholhok has signed a multi-year deal with the club, marking her entry into the Suncorp Super Netball league for the 2025 season. Cholhok, who has spent the last six years dominating the UK Netball Super League with Loughborough Lightning, brings with her an impressive resume that includes back-to-back championships in 2023 and 2024, as well as being the league’s top scorer on multiple occasions.

The 27-year-old Sudanese-born Ugandan international has long been a standout in the NSL, and her performance in the 2024 season was nothing short of extraordinary. Cholhok scored a league-high 975 goals, including a remarkable 50-goal haul in Lightning’s Grand Final victory over Manchester Thunder. Her consistent dominance under the post has made her one of the most feared shooters in the game, and her move to the SSN is eagerly anticipated by fans and pundits alike.

Mary Cholhok bids farewell to Loughborough

“I am so excited to be joining the Firebirds,” Cholhok shared. “It has always been my dream to play in the best league in the world. Every Saturday morning when I wake up, I watch highlights of SSN, and now it is surreal that I am going to be a part of the league. I am so grateful to the Firebirds for this opportunity. I can’t wait to get started and meet the Firebirds family.”

Firebirds Head Coach Kiri Wills, who has been keen on Cholhok for years, is thrilled to finally have her in the team. “I tried for many seasons to lure Mary to New Zealand to join me at the Northern Stars without success,” Wills said. “So to know Mary will now be joining me at the Firebirds in 2025 is a real thrill, and I can’t wait to see what she can do in the SSN. Mary’s height is obviously a key asset, but she’s developed her game so much in England. Her athleticism makes her difficult for defenders to manage, and as a result, her accuracy and volume are incredible.”

Cholhok’s signing is not only a boost for the Firebirds but also a significant moment for African netball, as she becomes the second Ugandan player to feature in the SSN, following in the footsteps of Proscovia Peace. With her proven track record and determination to succeed, Cholhok is set to make a big impact in the world’s premier netball league.

In a shocking move, the Queensland Firebirds have announced that they will not be offering a new contract to star shooter Donnell Wallam for the 2025 season. Wallam, who debuted for the Firebirds in 2022 and has since scored an impressive 1,744 goals over three seasons, has become one of the most prominent figures in the sport.

A proud Noongar woman, Wallam was named the 2023 NAIDOC Sportsperson of the Year and made an unforgettable debut for the Australian Diamonds with a match-winning performance against England. Her influence extended beyond the court, as she played a pivotal role in integrating First Nations culture into the everyday practices of the Firebirds.

Despite her success and recent selection for the Australian Diamonds in 2024, the Firebirds cited “game style and strategy” as the reasons behind their decision. “There is no doubt Donnell is a quality player and her Diamonds selection for 2024 supports that,” said Netball Queensland and Queensland Firebirds CEO Kate Davies. “This is simply a recruitment decision based on game style and strategy into the future, and I know Donnell will continue to shine wherever her future lies.”

This decision marks a significant shift in the Firebirds’ approach and leaves Wallam’s future in Super Netball uncertain as the off-season progresses.

The Queensland Firebirds have announced that goal shooter Ali Miller will not be returning to the club for the 2025 season. Initially signed as a training partner at the start of the year, Miller was elevated to the main squad in April and made her Super Netball debut in Round Nine against GIANTS Netball. Despite limited on-court opportunities, Miller quickly became a beloved member of the Firebirds, known for her team-first attitude and unwavering commitment.

“While her on-court opportunities have been limited, Ali has set an example throughout the season with her team-first attitude and commitment to always giving 100 percent to everything she does,” said Firebirds General Manager – High Performance, Adrian Thompson. “I know I speak for everyone at the club in wishing Ali all the best for her future.”

Rockstar Ravaillion Retires

Kim Ravaillion of the Queensland Firebirds

In another significant development, Queensland Firebirds captain Kim Ravaillion announced her retirement from netball, marking the end of an era for the sport.

Ravaillion’s illustrious career includes back-to-back premierships with the Firebirds in 2015 and 2016, where she played a crucial role in the team’s success. Reflecting on her journey, Ravaillion said, “I’ve spent over a third of my life as a professional netballer, but the time has come to close this chapter of my life. My time in purple has been amazing and unforgettable.”

Ravaillion’s impact on the Firebirds and the sport as a whole has been profound. She has been a leader both on and off the court, guiding the team through some of its most successful years. Her retirement leaves a significant void in the Firebirds’ lineup and in the broader netball community.

As Ravaillion steps away from the game, she looks forward to dedicating more time to her family, including reuniting with her husband, Adam, and their daughter, Georgie. “I don’t fully know what my next move will be, but what I do know is I’m closing the door on one big thing to open the door for another,” she said.

The Firebirds officially re-signed midcourter Hulita Veve for the 2025 season, securing the services of one of their most dedicated and hard-working players.

Veve, who made a triumphant return to the Firebirds in 2024 after years as a training partner, is thrilled to continue representing the team. “I’m just so grateful to get another opportunity to put on the purple dress for the 2025 SSN season,” Veve shares. “I didn’t think I would even make it this year, so to be where I am now and be able to do it all again next year is just the dream that keeps on giving. I couldn’t be more excited for another season with my Purple Family.”

Her re-signing is a huge boost for the Firebirds, who value her leadership and exceptional skills on the court. In 2024, Veve led the league in center pass receives among wing defenders, and ranked highly for pickups, deflections, and gains. Firebirds General Manager – High Performance, Adrian Thompson, emphasises Veve’s importance to the team’s future: “She is hard-working with a team-first mentality. We are looking forward to her contribution as we build for next season.”

Veve’s journey, from a premiership winner in 2016 to taking time off for motherhood and then fighting her way back into the elite level, continues to inspire both teammates and fans alike. As the first player to re-sign for the 2025 season, Veve’s commitment underscores her passion for the sport and the Firebirds, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting year ahead.

Bec Bulley And Queensland Firebirds Part Ways

13 June 2024

In a surprising turn of events, the Queensland Firebirds parted ways with head coach Bec Bulley, just under two years into her four-year contract. The decision came after a string of disappointing results that have left the Firebirds languishing at the bottom of the Suncorp Super Netball ladder.

Bulley, who took over as head coach from Megan Anderson in mid-2022, struggled to turn the team’s fortunes around, managing only six wins from 17 games as coach of the Firebirds.

Netball Queensland CEO Kate Davies acknowledged Bulley’s contributions, stating, “Bec has worked tirelessly to foster a positive culture at the club and has helped forge strong links to our club’s past champions. It is a legacy she should be extremely proud of. With Bec’s passion, experience, and work ethic, I am certain she has a bright future in the sport.”

Despite her efforts to adapt and respond to the team’s needs, Bulley faced criticism from within the playing group, who reportedly approached the Australian Netball Players’ Association with concerns about the direction of the team. The growing discontent and disappointing on-court results led to a unanimous decision that a change was necessary.

The New South Wales Swifts confirmed that they had officially parted ways with star shooter Sam Wallace-Joseph. The news sent shockwaves through the netball community, as Wallace-Joseph had been a beloved figure in the team since her signing in 2017. During her tenure, she leads the Swifts to two Super Netball titles and was named the club’s MVP three times, solidifying her place as one of the league’s most formidable talents.

After weeks of speculation (with the club stating matters relating to her behaviour within the team environment), it became clear that a mutual parting of ways was inevitable—an unprecedented move in the world of netball.

The impact of her departure leaves many wondering what the future holds for both the player and the team. With the drama surrounding her exit, it seems unlikely that Wallace-Joseph will be picked up by another team in the Suncorp Super Netball for the 2025 season, leaving her next move shrouded in uncertainty.

Giants Netball won’t be able to resign Chelsea Pitman for the 2025 season as she announced her retirement from both international and domestic netball, bringing an end to a remarkable 19-year career. Pitman, who has represented England as well as Australia on the international stage, revealed that she is stepping away from the sport to focus on personal matters, particularly her desire to address pregnancy issues she has faced.

“I have made the extremely tough decision to retire from international netball,” Pitman shared. “I never thought I’d be someone who chose to retire from the international stage, but it’s the right time for me.”

Pitman’s career has been anything but conventional. Debuting for the Sydney Swifts in 2006 as a teenager, she went on to represent nine different clubs across three countries and donned the national colours for both the Australian Diamonds and the English Roses. Her journey includes winning a World Cup with Australia in 2011, and later securing a historic Commonwealth Games gold with England in 2018.

Her final appearance in the Suncorp Super Netball was with the GIANTS, where she brought her illustrious career full circle by playing under the same coach, Julie Fitzgerald, who gave her her first big break with the Swifts. Pitman’s departure is a significant moment for netball, as fans and players alike bid farewell to one of the game’s most cherished figures.
